Mass Media: 2012 election

Mass media affects politics through social media and displays of partisan advertisements.

Social networking has strongly influenced the 2012 presidential election.

-Obama used online resources effectively in 08 by getting funding through online donations. Supporters had an easier time contributing to the campaign because of the advanced use of technology.
-Apps have been used often in social media to influence the 2012 political campaign
Obama and Romney have created their own apps to use to connect voters with their campaigns and spread ideas and messages throughout social media and networking. Obama started his 2012 campaign app in 2010. It is called ‘Organizing for America.’ Romney tried to provide his challenge app called ‘With Mitt’ but it spelled America wrong as "Amercia" in the campaign slogan. Obama’s campaign seems to be a little more on top of the technology because they have the practice from the 2008 election. Rob Enderle of the Enderle Group (The Enderle Group shows different perspectives at technology and shows different reasons that people involved with technology should care about the issue) said, "Obama is more aggressive in terms of managing perceptions in terms of mobile. As for Romney, it's almost as if he doesn't exist" in mobile. Republicans are active in technology and social media and apps, but Romney’s actual campaign has not done a lot with apps and mobile social initiatives. 20 million apps are installed everyday on Facebook and 1 in every 13 people on Earth use Facebook. 48% of young Americans said they find out about news through Facebook. This means that apps are great ways for campaigns to get info out into the world. It would seem that Obama tends to use social networking and apps more effectively than Romney, thus improving his chances with the large population of social networkers.
-Smart phones that have begun to provide online access have provided tons of new ways for social networking and online ads to revolve around the 2012 election.(1)

• In regard to smartphones and access to internet on phones, and those types of mobile media, Velti, a mobile marketing and advertising provider along with Harris Interactive did a survey (July 2012) and found out that 49 percent of smartphone owners (specifically iphone and android) would vote for President Barack Obama, while 31 percent would vote for Mitt Romney. They also found out that Mitt Romney is leading in traditional polls that have nothing to do with smartphones. This goes to show how mobile media has become crucial to political success. Obama seems to dominate the mobile media while Romney seems to be a bit behind in that area.(2)

-The use of social networking has held politicians much more accountable for everything they say and do.

• Romney’s 47% statement couldn’t have spread so fast without social networking and youtube.(3,4)

How people get news

• In the good old days...
• In the 50s, the popularity of television skyrocketed. However, there were limited channels, due to technological constraints. It stayed this way until the late 70s
• It made economic sense for the big stations to emulate each others programming. This meant that if you turned on the television at 6 o'clock, you were stuck with news. People watched the news because of what was on before it, or what was coming after it. All that changed with CABLE...
• Cable news, cable other stuff (It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.)
• With the rise of cable television, the choices in programming increased greatly. What kind of content you preferred mattered more, because you could actually choose between different genres at the same time. Those who wanted news all the time could have more news than ever before, but those who didn't want it could avoid it with ease. The remote control helped too. Where television news had narrowed the information gap, cable broadened it. You didn't have to sit through the news, but you did have to sit through...
• Political ads! And misleading, negative ones at that. This is where you can get news accidentally today. These ads could easily sway the so-called floating voter (the ill informed non partisan voter) because they often focus on controversy and drama, not real issues.
• MSNBC and FOX News
• Today it makes economic sense for these networks to be as extreme as possible. They don't need to get everyone to watch, but there are enough liberals and conservatives to support them.

Political advertising played a large role in the outcome of the 2012 presidential election.

-Advertising has hugely increased throughout the 2012 election. It has become a much more common tool in spreading political messages and influencing voters.

• Online advertising has dramatically increased throughout the span of one presidential election went from $22 million to $159 million. Online political ads have become more important in a candidates’ budget.(5)

-A plethora of research has been done to figure out how exactly advertisements can be the most effective and convince the most voters to pick their candidate.

• Use of negative ads is helpful when a candidate is behind in the election, whereas positive ads are used when candidates are ahead.
• The Wesleyan Research Project of 2008 showed how less than 1 in 10 ads related to the presidential election were negative. Now, negative ads about the 2012 presidential election have taken over 7 out of 10 negative ads from Obama and Romney. This is because negative ads have shown to instill fear into the minds of Americans. This fear comes from scary music or images or concepts, and has been shown to make people research more information. After watching negative ads that instill fear, people tend to remember more facts from the ad.
• All this detailed research has really contributed to the findings of new information. In a study done by Richard Eibich it was found that children make people lean conservative. Parents tend to be more conservative about their views and judgemental of others whereas non parents tend to be more relaxed about these issues. Positive feelings associated with ads make people feel more connected to the candidate and more supportive. These positive feelings can come in the form of bright colors, happy music, smiles, blue skies, etc.

-In 2011 there was a Supreme Court Case that allowed for unlimited campaign donations.

• This means that money spent on advertisements and mobile media will dramatically increase for this election. This means whichever politician has more supporters with more money (Romney), automatically will have access to more ads and more possibilities of moving voters to vote for them. That’s one issue with political advertisements and how they affect elections.(8)

-Mobile advertising is a new trend that has really opened doors for political campaigns.

• Mobile advertising is many different kinds of online technology that can help campaigns make a big impact and mobilize and inform their voters.
• The Romney campaign used mobile advertising in different specific areas of the country to target swing states for primaries. It has become very helpful for reaching people everywhere at a much faster and more effective rate than ever.(9)

HOW MOST PEOPLE GET THEIR INFO:
Media is how most people get most of their info, from secondary sources, not primary ones. "Most of the new information voters receive over the course of a political campaign is transmitted either by news media or through social networks such as interpersonal discussion" (Mondak 62)(10)
Because our country has developed these many new ways of receiving and displaying news, accessibility will reign supreme. The few interested voters will search the masses of media for answers and sources, back checking and following the online trail. The not so interested voters will only be exposed to the top layer of, most bias, fluffed up form of that news which leads many voters into the very common trap of ignorance.

AND BECAUSE THEY GET THEIR MEDIA FROM SECONDARY SOURCES, THEY ARE VICTIMS TO BIAS

PEOPLE ARE MAJORLY AFFECTED BY THE BIAS IN MEDIA...
-After the first 2012 presidential debate when Obama did poorly, the media exaggerated and talked and talked about how Romney was leading in the  polls. That on its own probably really influenced how people thought about the candidates.
“If reports say a certain candidate is ahead in an election, the public will come to accept that evaluation, which can greatly influence how voters cast their ballots. For the most part, people do not want to waste time on candidates they believe do not have a chance to win.”(11)
-Because of the massive increase in social network activity, like twitter, which is up to 1 billion tweets a week, many changes were made in the kind of public participation American voters interact with now, e.i. #Debate on the Presidential/ VP debates. The impact that social networks have on the voter and the accessibility of our opinions, now play a much larger role in politics. Now, everyone with a laptop or cellphone can do what only trained, professional writers were able to do a long time ago. They can give accessible information for others to collect and form opinions on, thus altering the voices of the voter.(12)

Equal Schools Issue Essay/Spoken Word

Some kids in mpls live within a few minutes driving distance, but live drastically different lives. Many suburban schools are mistaken for private schools by students for the schools' sheer size and wealth. Some suburban schools I have visited have been described as looking like an art museum by other visiting students. While all the public inner city schools simply struggle to make ends meet. This disparity is caused by the fact that schools acquire more money if they are in a richer neighborhoods. This system needs to be changed. Kids shouldn't have fewer opportunities because of where they live. I propose first that all public schools should have a minimum amount of money that is given to them regardless of any other factors if this doesn't already exist. Second schools should be given more money the more students the schools have. This will encourage the schools to improve and to use the same amount of money per student as other schools. This change will also get rid of the drastic disparities of public schools today. In order to make real change in this problem people need to make this a common topic and more of an issue. Another thing you can do to help it to write MN's politicians in mass quantities in order to get attention. Hopefully this change will happen one day and works so that kids can go to equal schools all throughout the state.

Some may say that America is out of the recession. Some may also say that America’s turning into a third world country. To confirm both of these fears, you can look to Pine Ridge Reservation. Pine Ridge Reservation has two major problems: alcoholism and poverty. These two go hand in hand. If Pine Ridge’s residents weren’t drowning in poverty, and if they had jobs, you could lower the poverty level and number of alcoholics.

Pine Ridge’s widespread poverty and alcohol abuse doesn’t just affect immediate impoverished families or alcoholics. It affects everyone on the reservation. Whether it’s family outside the reservation, or the people living on and near the reservation.

The biggest challenges people on the reservation face is the fact that many live in poverty and have no job. So, they really don’t have an incentive to do anything productive with their life. Plus, alcohol, a way to get away momentarily from their problems, is readily accessible.

 

However, all hope is not lost. There is the chance to create jobs for people, and to provide them with job training. By providing jobs and job training, you can give the people the incentive to work as well as well as lowering the poverty level. Thus, you’re in a sense killing two birds with one stone.

“Cruel World”
One day I was walkin down the street, mindin my own business, then outta nowhere I saw a man dazed and confused stumblin on the side of the street in the Bronx. I came up to im’and there he was as stiff as a board.
I asked him “What the hell happened to you?”
He just looked at me and this is what he said,
“Oh lord, Ain’t no rest for the wicked, got me spendin money, threw it all to hell. But, I got bills to pay, I got mouths to feed. And ain’t nothin in this world for free.”

Just a few hours later I was gettin outta the bank. Money in my pocket, filled with lovely dollar bills.
A strange man walks up to me demandin my money armed to the teeth. Man oh man what a buzz kill. The expression on his face said it all, “Give me all you’re money, if you make a move I won’t think twice!”
But I had ta ask...
“What made you want to live this kind of life?”
He took off his mask and this is what he said.
“Ain’t no rest for the wicked, money don’t grow on trees, I got bills to pay, I got mouths to feed and Ain’t nothin in this world for free yo.” Scared and beggin for my life “Why me?” I says.
“Defensless makes a vulnerable victim”
“Keep yourself packed with heat, I don’t need to be discrete.” Just as I was bout’ to hand im the cash he took off without a sound!”

A couple hours later when the day was winding down and comin to an end. I’m sittin in my chair at home turned on the T.V still dazed n’ confused and what I saw I almost couldn’t comprehend.

You see, the governor lookin black n’ blue with his hands in cuffs with a coat over his head. Caught stashin his bag with righteous dollar bills... Doin so, made the people wonder why he seeks such unsatisfatory thrills. The reporter on scene kept ramblin about.

And at that time the governor’s just cleared out his bank account.

If a black person and white person committed the same crime, who would get the longest sentencing? When we call a police they take forever but if we were in a white neighborhood, they would be there no longer than one hundred and sixty seconds. The problem is Poverty, Law , and justice not getting treated fair and equally. Solutions are a better government, help for needed people, come together as one, and sterotyping. I understand you see black people taking out each other's lives. I know you think if we don't care about each, so why should y'all care. Well, all black people not like that. OTHERS DIRECTLY/INDIRECTLY AFFECTED: Challenges: Not being brave enough to help the child, not caring about the situation. Opportunities: Standing up for you and that kid, Starting a new chapter in that little kid's life, STEP 4: STRATEGIES: Be aware of child abuse and to not ignore the situation because it might just get worse until something goes wrong. Standing up for that kid to show that you care for he/she and that what he/she is going through will come to a stop, so that they could for once begin to live there life the way they are suppose to. STEP 5: SOLUTIONS: STEP 1 of my action plan is for everyone to be aware of child abuse going around you and to take action right away. STEP 2 of my action plan is to help out any kid that I see being abused or being mistreated in any way. STEP 3 of my action plan is the world to come together and to put child abuse to an end once and for all. STEP 4 of my action plan is that if you can not take action of a child being abused the least you can do is to report it to someone so that the young child can get some help that it needs. STEP 6: EXPECTED OUTCOMES: The outcomes I hope to see is for child abuse to come to an end so that every kid deserves a chance in life. Just think about if you were the one being abused I believe that you would not be to fond of that would you? So all I have to say is... "Treat others the way you want to be treated"

Unlike being an aerobe, we were not obligated to write a poem

Every subject in school suffers from the need to make learning fun, rather than for its own sake. Even though teachers will say that they are trying to get students to learn for its own sake by making it “fun” they are cheapening the knowledge, giving only the most limpid parts. Leading students to believe they are experts, that their opinion is just as important on a given subject as fact, or as that of someone for whom this is their life’s work. If learning isn’t “fun” then it is obviously busy work, the most odious phrase to student and teacher alike. However all that is boring is not necessarily busy work after all Repititio est mater studiorem (repetition is the mother of learning). But there comes a point when, yes, it is busy work.

However now with this focus on “fun”, to keep kids in school because we want every child to be their best, and the only way to do that is through pushing every child through college, obviously. We have a conflict of interests. There are still students who would learn for its own sake, who would prefer teachers to be teachers instead of guides and friends. “There are three classes of people: those who see. Those who see when they are shown. Those who do not see.” ~Leonardo de Vinci Is it better to pour our focus into those who will not see, or those who are able? Perhaps it is most just to still pour the resources of those who see and use their sights for the betterment of themselves and their families into the eyes of those who will not behold on their own, even when shown. But is that fair? Of Course Life isn’t fair, hasn’t been for a very long time, and frankly won’t be till the end of ages.

But that is what our school (and I am sure other’s as well) tries to do. And when it can’t it just lowers the standards, or in a truly radical proposition eliminates them. The justification? Grades (based upon standards) are in direct opposition to fostering a love of learning. So how do teachers intend to prepare students to live in the world? Or even in college?

Most students don’t intend to be unemployed. And many do not really have what it takes to be self employed, they haven’t learned the skills. Teachers are trying to be friends, which diminishes the respect for them. Friends don’t tend to give much work to friends. They would rather have fun together. But a teacher had obligations as well. And it is possible to be a liked teacher by just doing the job. The shift towards teachers being guides on the side, takes from their value.

Boost Up (a program to help students stay in school) claims one reason kids drop out is because they are bored. Yes they are bored, but making all the lessons into games which then must be discussed. While enforcing teamwork, it brings the caliper of the classroom experience down to the middle of the room, in theory neutralizing the lack of understanding of these who don’t get it (for whatever reason, be it valid or not) with those who do.

But it leaves the kids who get it bored. And lead the majority down the false idea that they are somehow experts on a subject. Which is dangerous.

There are programs in place for struggling students, or those who are statistically more likely to struggle. AVID is one such program, it states(I have no idea how well they uphold this as I am not qualified for the program) that they get students college ready by raising the bar.
We would have a better world if the bar was set high, and the push to be the best one can be was just directed to the underachievers. The way to push those that know how to do well in school is not to give them more work because they got done quickly. Nor is it to ignore them, It is better to stop trying to make classes “fun” and make them actually enjoyable instead. By making them challenging for all students, fascinating, and covering the basics first.
